Gynecologic Oncology
Our Gynecologic Oncologists are specialty physicians you can trust who are dedicated to treating gynecologic cancers. They provide comprehensive cancer care and offer various options in the prevention and treatment of women's cancers to include:
- Epithelial Ovarian Cancer; the kind of ovarian cancer that Gilda Radner had
- Ovarian Germ Cell Tumor; the female equivalent of what Lance Armstrong had. These tumors usually occur in teenage girls or young women.
- Endometrial Cancer; the kind of cancer that arises in the lining of the uterus and is associated with hormones
- Other Uterine Cancers; the kind of cancers of the uterus which are aggressive and more likely to spread
- Cervical cancer; the kind of cancer that the pap smear detects
- Vaginal and Vulvar Cancer; usually occurs in the elderly
- Gestational Trophoblastic Disease; arises from cells in the placenta, or afterbirth, and is associated with pregnancy.
- Endometriosis; when tissues that usually grow inside uterus instead grow on the outside. These tissues often grow on the surfaces of organs in the pelvis or abdomen, where they are not supposed to grow.
- Pelvic Organ Prolapse: prolapse occurs when the pelvic muscles and tissue become weak and can no longer hold the organs in place correctly.
- Reconstructive Surgery
- Fertility Sparing Surgery: for women diagnosed with early-stage ovarian cancer, removal of one ovary has become a real option. This conservative surgery greatly increases the chances of preserving fertility.
- Laparoscopic Surgery; (often called "belly button surgery", or endoscopy) is a surgical technique involving small incisions in the abdomen through which major surgical procedures can be performed.
- Minimally Invasive Surgery; means performing surgery in many cases without large, open incisions and sometimes under sedation and local anesthesia providing:
* less postoperative discomfort
* lower risk of infection
* faster recovery
* little scarring
One of the greatest trends in the history of surgery is the advent of minimally invasive techniques for a wide spectrum of surgeries. Our specialty physicians have received both national and international recognition as leaders in the area of gynecologic oncology for their dedication and commitment to the prevention and treatment of women's cancers.
