The Obstetrics and Gynecology Clerkship program in Tucson operates out of University Medical Center, a nonprofit hospital located at the Arizona Health Sciences Center (AHSC), adjacent to The University of Arizona. AHSC includes the colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Public Health. UMC is a tertiary facility utilized by a variety of physicians including private and academic physicians, residents, and researchers. More than 100 of UMC’s physicians were identified among The Best Doctors in America in 2004. The UMC Ob/Gyn Clerkship is divided into three segments, consisting of obstetrics, benign gynecology, and gynecology oncology. UMC averages 2600 deliveries per year and 4000 gynecologic procedures per year. In addition, the Division of Women’s Cancers at the Arizona Cancer Center treats thousands of women annually throughout the Southwest, and is the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in Arizona. Although the majority of student learning and responsibility will be derived from University Physicians Healthcare (UPH) patients, other learning opportunities will be available at offsite clinics, such as St. Elizabeth’s of Hungary, Planned Parenthood, and University Physicians Hospital Kino Campus. In addition, students may partake in surgeries at Northwest and St. Joseph’s hospitals during their gynecologic oncology rotation. These affiliations enable us to provide an excellent blend of academic and clinical instruction in educating our next generation of healthcare providers.
