Welcome to the Ob/Gyn Clerkship
On behalf of our respective departments including faculty and residents we wish to welcome you to your third year clerkship in obstetrics and gynecology.
This primary learning experience is designed to meet several goals. First, we hope you develop some appreciation for the specialty of obstetrics and gynecology which deals exclusively with female patients at all stages of their life cycle. Second, it is our hope that you will integrate all of the experiences that you have had in your education to this point regarding women’s health into a greater picture which will assist you in becoming a more knowledgeable, compassionate and excellent physician. Finally, please realize whatever medical specialty you ultimately choose you will undoubtedly encounter women and you will want to provide them with the best care and information possible.
To achieve your learning goals there are four clerkship sites, three on the Phoenix campus and one on the Tucson campus. This division is necessary to give you the optimum clinical opportunities and exposure to the technical aspects appropriate for your level of training. Each site has its own “personality” and while the overall curriculum, learning objectives, lecture material, and evaluation process are the same, the day to day assignments may differ.
Approximately one third of this clerkship is in an ambulatory setting. As a relatively short clerkship (less than six weeks) it requires a rather steep learning curve, but it offers the opportunity to have one of the most enjoyable learning experiences of your third year.
This website will give you information about the clerkship in general and about any specific site however during the orientation at the beginning of the clerkship you will be given a more thorough description of the site where you are assigned. Students are allowed to request a clerkship site and that request is honored as much as possible. When many requests occur for one site, a lottery system is developed. Once you have been assigned a time and a site, changing those times and sites is strongly discouraged as it could potentially influence the quality of education of the other students at that site. We look forward to meeting and working with you.
